Istanbul’s museums and galleries house some of the world’s most extraordinary collections, but visiting them during public hours often means dealing with crowds, noise, and limited time at each exhibit. Our private museum and gallery tour service offers exclusive access to Istanbul’s cultural treasures, with expert guides and, in some cases, access outside of public opening hours.

After-Hours Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace

Visitors admiring artwork in a museum gallery

The most popular private tour is the Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace after-hours experience. Arranged through our contacts at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, this tour allows you to explore Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace after they have closed to the public, with only your guide and a security escort present. Standing alone beneath the great dome of Hagia Sophia, with no crowds and no noise, is one of the most profound cultural experiences available anywhere in the world.

The Hagia Sophia after-hours tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers the ground floor, the upper gallery with its Byzantine mosaics, the weeping column, and the sultan’s lodge. Your guide, an art historian specializing in Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, provides detailed historical commentary at each stop. The Topkapi Palace after-hours tour lasts approximately 2 hours and covers the Imperial Courtyards, the Harem, the Imperial Treasury (home of the Topkapi Dagger and the Spoonmaker’s Diamond), and the Baghdad Pavilion. Both tours can be combined into a single 4-hour experience.

After-hours access at Hagia Sophia starts at 15,000 TL per venue, which includes the access fee, security escort, and guide. The Topkapi Palace after-hours tour starts at 18,000 TL. Both tours combined are available for 28,000 TL. These experiences must be arranged at least 2 weeks in advance, as they require Ministry approval and security arrangements.

Istanbul Modern and Pera Museum Private Tours

For art enthusiasts, we arrange private tours of the Istanbul Modern art museum, the Pera Museum, and the Sakip Sabanci Museum, with curators or art historians as guides. Istanbul Modern, located in a converted warehouse in Karakoy, houses Turkey’s foremost collection of contemporary art, including works by Turkish modernists and emerging artists. The museum was redesigned in 2023 by Renzo Piano and is now one of the most architecturally significant cultural spaces in Istanbul.

The Pera Museum in Beyoglu hosts rotating exhibitions of international art alongside its permanent collection of Anatolian weights and measures and Kütahya tiles. The museum’s Orientalist Painting Collection includes works by European artists who depicted the Ottoman Empire in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Sakip Sabanci Museum, located in a historic mansion on the Bosphorus in Emirgan, hosts major international exhibitions (past exhibitions have included Picasso, Rodin, and Dali) and has a permanent collection of Ottoman calligraphy and paintings.

Private tours with an art historian guide start at 1,500 TL for a 2-hour tour. Curator-led tours, where available, start at 3,500 TL. We can also arrange access to the museums’ private archives and conservation laboratories for serious researchers and collectors.

We can also arrange visits to private galleries in the Beyoglu and Karakoy districts, where you can meet gallery owners and artists, view works before they go on public display, and even arrange purchases. The Istanbul art scene has grown dramatically in the past decade, with galleries like Galerist, Rodeo, and Pilot showcasing some of Turkey’s most exciting contemporary artists. Many of these galleries are tucked away in historic buildings in Beyoglu and Karakoy, and visiting them provides insight into the creative energy of the city.

For collectors, we provide art advisory services, connecting you with reputable dealers and auction houses in Istanbul. We can arrange valuations, provenance research, and shipping for purchased works. We also organize custom art itineraries for collectors visiting Istanbul for the Istanbul Art Week or the Contemporary Istanbul art fair, which takes place annually in September.

Chora Church and Basilica Cistern Private Tours

For a more specialized experience, we can arrange a private tour of the Chora Church (Kariye Mosque), which houses some of the finest Byzantine mosaics and frescoes in the world. Your guide, an art historian specializing in Byzantine art, will walk you through the 14th-century mosaics depicting the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The Chora Church is currently undergoing restoration, but we can arrange access to the sections that are open, along with a detailed explanation of the restoration process.

We can also arrange private tours of the Basilica Cistern, the underground Byzantine water reservoir built in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian. The cistern’s 336 columns, atmospheric lighting, and the two Medusa head sculptures create an otherworldly setting. A private tour with a historian guide includes access to areas not open to the public, including the upper walkways and the water level monitoring station.

Private tours of the Chora Church and Basilica Cistern start at 2,000 TL per venue for a 90-minute tour with an expert guide. Contact us with your cultural interests and we will create a customized museum and gallery itinerary for your Istanbul visit.
